A new Barbie doll commemorates a 19th-century suffragist


MORE THAN HALF a century earlier than Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat, Ida B. Wells was faraway from a prepare for refusing to maneuver into a segregated carriage. Wells, a journalist born into slavery in 1862, later uncovered the horrors of lynching and co-founded the Nationwide Affiliation for the Development of Colored Folks. She was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer prize in 2020. Now Mattel is honouring her in a Barbie doll. The doll clutches Memphis Free Speech, the newspaper she co-owned. Different girls Mattel is honouring embrace Sally Trip, an astronaut, and Maya Angelou, the creator who this week turned the primary black lady to seem on the quarter coin.
